Fillmore County Hospital Provides Wellness Activities for Community

July 13, 2016 - "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Okay, yes it's true, Benjamin Franklin was referring to fire safety when he first coined this phrase. However, you'd be hard pressed to find a better phrase to describe our current state of health in America.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), it is estimated that 70 percent of deaths in America are linked to preventable conditions, including heart disease, stroke, chronic lung disease, diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Yet most of our time and money is spent on treating disease rather than preventing it.

Within recent years, Fillmore County Hospital has become more proactive in promoting wellness rather than focusing solely on providing reactive medical treatment after a person gets sick. One of Fillmore County Hospital's initiatives for promoting wellness in the community is to encourage physical activity. Regular physical activity is one of the most important things a person can do to stay healthy. Studies show that individuals who exercise regularly have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, musculoskeletal problems and some cancers (CDC).

Two upcoming Fillmore County Hospital sponsored events that promote physical activity are the annual Step It Up Challenge and Path 2 Prevention 5K.

The 5th Annual Step It Up Challenge, which will begin on August 1st, is a six-week voluntary team program. Employees of each organization will form one team (must have a minimum of 5 participants). All participants will wear an accurate pedometer and track their daily steps. Team steps will be averaged and compared to other participating organizations. The winning team will receive bragging rights and a trophy to display at their place of business.

Last year, we had 14 local organizations compete in the challenge. We are hoping to increase the number of participating businesses and encourage employers to register and take part in the event.

2016 marks the 4th year that FCH has teamed up with the Fillmore County Foundation, Fillmore County Medical Center, and Fillmore County Coalition to host the Path 2 Prevention 5K. This year's theme is 'Super Cool' which aims to inspire everyone to "be your own superhero when it comes to your health"!

The event, which was established to help raise funds for a public walking trail on the FCH and FCMC campus, will take place on the evening of Friday, August 5th with the mile run starting at 7:00 PM and the 5K at 7:15 PM.

"Last year we had over 150 participants and we are hoping to see an even better turnout this year" said Jenni Hoarty, Fillmore County Hospital Wellness Coordinator. "This event is for runners and walkers of all skill level and age."

Participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Superhero with prizes being awarded to the top three costumes. There will be cool-off stations throughout the race and cold treats for race finishers.

For more information on either event, please contact Jenni Hoarty (jhoarty@myfch.org).

These popular events are a great way for FCH to reach out to its staff and community and reinforce the importance of being proactive and building healthy habits even when it's not convenient. Healthy habits are an "automatic" defense against most illnesses and can provide us a long, healthy - and thus happy - life.
